Mental Radio
by Upton Sinclair
Writing Mental Radio represented a real gamble for the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair. He was respected as a social activist and considered by the public to be an authority who told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And so, to put his name to a book that didn’t deal with abuses of capitalism but rather psychic phenomena was gutsy to say the least.
Sinclair’s wife, Mary Craig Sinclair, whom he called “Craig”, was the inspiration for Mental Radio. For all of her life, Craig seemed to know things either that hadn’t happened yet or that had happened so far away that she couldn’t possibly know about them. Armed with logic, reason and a desire to expose the truth, Upton along with his wife set out to construct a series of experiments to examine exactly what Craig was able to do.
Together the Sinclairs established a scientific protocol that would, I imagine, pass muster even today. And through the chapters of Mental Radio, which document the experiments, we learn about when Craig succeeded, when she failed and when she seemed to do something in between.
The research is presented with Sinclair’s literary style and skills. So, it’s far from being a boring or overly technical read. Moreover, the text is supplemented with the actual drawings that were made during the experiments allowing the readers to draw their own conclusions on the results.
If you’re a sceptic, then you’ll find the evidence produced by the Sinclairs worthy of analysis and consideration. But if you’re a believer or someone who’s interested in telepathy, remote viewing or psychic phenomena in general, then Mental Radio is a must for your reading list. Moreover, in Chapter 21 Craig shares with us a detailed step-by-step description of how she did what she did so well.
For me, Mental Radio was more than a book about a series of experiments. It was more than possibly some of the strongest evidence that psychic abilities are real. It was an inspirational and heart-warming tale of love and support of a man for his wife. It was a tale that needed to be told, consequences be damned!
