Insight through Intuition
by Julie Soskin
Insight through Intuition isn’t your average psychic development book. Nor is it your typical spiritual awakening how-to read. If anything, it’s actually a bit of both. And that’s what distinguishes this book from so many out there to help you look within to discover what’s all around.
In the first couple of chapters, Julie Soskin sets the stage for her path to self-growth. She begins by trying to make the abstract concept of spirituality a little more concrete and accessible. She continues by comparing and contrasting the contemporary concepts of being spiritual and the traditional notions of being religious.
She then considers various scientific theories that appear to be on the cusp of explaining the previously unexplainable – psychic and spiritual phenomena. With that, we are ready to embark on the Soskin spiritual self-development programme.
Soskin starts out as you would expect with exercises on meditation, visualisation and connecting with the chakras. But then she departs from what you might think of as the standard curriculum. Instead, she draws on elements of modern psychology. Here the exercises deal with identifying personal prejudices, cutting ties and transforming conflict.
The Soskin approach is unique in that it stresses actively engaging and dealing with your own issues and baggage as part of one’s psychic and spiritual development. Eventually, however, you do reach exercises and techniques on psychic touch, aura reading, mediumship and the Tarot.
Insight through Intuition succeeds most as what I would call a contextual piece. It gives you the background and just enough history and theory that today’s audience wants on spirituality. As a workbook, the exercises are detailed and easy to understand. And former students of Soskin share their personal experiences, which makes for a nice and reassuring touch.
My main criticism would be that group development is set out as the most efficient and productive means to develop spiritually and psychically. That’s fine if you live somewhere where you can find a like-minded group of people to embark on such a programme or if you are someone who works best within a group. But I couldn’t help but feel that this could have the clearly unintended effect of discouraging individual exploration. And that would, of course, be a real shame.
Nonetheless, the good outweighs the bad and as such I recommend Insight through Intuition to those who are ready to see spiritual and psychic development through a different prism.
