Will Storr vs. The Supernatural
by Will Storr
Okay, I admit it. As soon as I picked up Will Storr vs. The Supernatural and read the cover I wanted to buy it. And as soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to read it. Well, who wouldn’t?
Subtitled One Man’s Search for the Truth about Ghosts, this book promises a serious investigative journalist in one corner and the truth about ghosts and all things paranormal in the other. I’ll put it to you – who couldn’t help but be seduced into wanting to know more? I admit it again – I was hooked.
As a page turner, you’re not apt to be disappointed. Mr. Storr’s style is witty, conversational and padded with the right amount of self-deprecation I like to see in a journalist. You’d have to try pretty hard not to like the guy.
And as a writer, he knows the formula – he can end a chapter à la Dan Brown that compels you to read on to find out what happened next. Therein, however, lies the disappointment – because, you see, nothing really happens in all his 311 pages.
I suppose it is Mr. Storr’s skill as a feature writer that fools you into thinking that he’ll leave no stone unturned in his quest to find out whether there’s life after death. To be fair, he does travel to America (more than once) to visit haunted houses and witness cases of purported possession. He spends the night in a supposedly haunted pub. He attends séances. And he even goes on the set of British TV’s Most Haunted.
But throughout the book I kept getting the idea that he was spinning it out to look as if he had done more than he had. If I had had a fluff-o-meter it would have been off the scale, especially when he related his encounters with the monsterologist and the so-called black magic vigilantes of Woking.
It’s a fun read. But does it mean that it deserves to be read? I’m not so sure it does.
