If you know me or have read about my background, then you'll know I've not always been a full-time psychic. While I always felt something there, I also knew that there were other things I needed to do before hanging out my shingle.

In those days I always knew what to say when people asked what I did. I was either in law, IT or management. But after I stepped out from behind the crystal ball, I would often stumble when asked what I did. We might not like it or even admit it, but all of us make a snap judgment on someone when they respond to that ubiquitous cocktail question - What do you do?

Perhaps my initial hesitations stemmed from a worry about acceptance. After all, my other careers were easily understood, recognised and made me one of the crowd. Looking back it seems to have taken me too long to finally acknowledge that what was for them wasn't for me.

Eventually, of course, I did and here I am. But "psychic" still wasn't my response when asked what I did. Did I not see myself as a psychic? Or was I simply avoiding a debate on whether it was all nonsense? Perhaps I just didn't want to be put on the spot for a quickie reading. Most of all I wanted to steer clear of the challenge:
