Spirit communication is just like
any other kind of communication
!

This week’s mailbag offered a poignant letter from a young girl from the American State of Louisiana. Annie (of course not her real name) introduced herself with a loving description of her town, perhaps more properly termed a village. She painted a picture of a place where it sounds like the past is at home with the present and where belief in spirits is a given, although apparently not all that openly discussed. But Annie wrote with a confession of sorts and a question.

It seems that Annie has been receiving regular communication from the other side. She said it started some time ago without suggesting or revealing any sort of precipitous incident. She has assumed that these spirit voices are not just “ordinary” spirits, but must be her spirit guides. You see, a spirit guide assists us in life and oversees our growth and development and doesn’t just offer messages from the beyond. And although believing in such communication, she contacted me for my insights. So this week in addressing her query I found myself asking:

Spirit guide - or is it just a spirit?

With all the articles and television programmes devoted to all matters supernatural, we could be forgiven for thinking that spirit communication was a modern day discovery. But we know that the ancient Greeks regularly consulted oracles such as the one at Delphi to contact the spirit realm. Before them, cave drawings in Europe seem to imply that prehistoric man was aware of the interaction between human and spirit.

In Victorian England, spiritualist mediums offered séances and paranormal phenomena of table-rapping and levitation as evidence of the spirit world. And today one doesn’t have to look too far to uncover descriptions of people claiming communication with angels, extraterrestrials or even elves and leprechauns. Regardless of the incarnation, the fact is that every major religion incorporates some element of spirit communication.

Too many dismiss contact with other dimensions as either evil or an illness. And even many of those who don’t relegate it to fantasy or fallacy believe spirit contact requires years of training involving intricate ceremonies and an ever-present element of danger. This is the true fantasy. Becoming aware of spirits and learning to interact with them can be one of the most rewarding and enriching challenges in life, and not just restricted to the chosen few.

But why bother? What’s the point? I’ve asked the questions many times before. Like so many things in life, you get out of working with spirit guides what you put into it. Some are comforted by the knowledge that they are never really alone. Others seek insights and wisdom of those who have come and gone before. And who couldn’t benefit from enhanced creativity and inspiration offered by spirit muses?

While all of us can benefit from spirit communication, not every spirit who contacts us is worthy of our time. Just because we experience something beyond the rational doesn’t mean that we throw our rational tools out the window. Logic, reason, responsibility and control: they are ours in all that we do when we interact with those on the physical plane and they are ours when we interact with those on the spiritual plane. I have to admit that I don’t believe that the act of dying somehow magically imparts the wisdom of the Universe on someone. If they were good in life, then I believe they will be so in spirit. Equally if theirs was a lot of less than honourable acts, then I have to suspect they’ll be up to more of the same after crossing over.

Whether you embark on a programme to work with your spirit guides or whether you feel the contact of someone in spirit, you are in control. And as long as you retain this control over your life nothing from the spirit world can harm you. Bluntly put, only a fool would believe everything that a spirit told him. And I for one challenge my guides on a regular basis.

If someone walked up to you in the street and told you to sell your house now, would you rush to the nearest estate agent? I think not. And I hope you’d apply the same healthy level of scrutiny and scepticism to such advice from a so-called spirit guide. In short, keep your wits about you and do as you’d do in any other situation.

It isn’t always easy achieving that first meeting with our spirit guides. And as such, I work with lots of clients to facilitate this initial communication and introduce them to their guides and workers. If you feel that you’re not making the progress that you’d like at exploring the spirit world, then perhaps a reading could assist you in unlocking the door. If you’re not sure, just email me and ask.

As always, feel free to email me with any comments, suggestions or feedback on PsychicBridges.

Thanks again for all your support and until next week,

Kindest regards,
