Psychic? Medium? It's all the same. Or is it?

This past week I had the radio on as I went about some daily chores when I heard an interview being plugged. My ears pricked up and as if on auto pilot I went over and turned up the volume. The topic? Psychics and those who believe in the paranormal.

You didn’t need a sixth sense to foresee the setup. There was the psychic and then there was the scientist who, as the voice of reason, was there to provide rational explanations and debunk anything that didn’t fit in with his notions of how things work. To be honest, it was a pretty dull interview.

There would be no proof sufficient for the sceptic and the believer already had the proof he needed. Both men sounded educated, articulate and well-versed in the subject matter. Until the scientist sceptic made one clanger of a faux-pas. He said, “Well, as a psychic I suppose you also talk to dead people.”

There I stood, a non-believer of what I had just heard. This so-called expert making such an amateurish mistake blurring the distinct roles of psychic and medium. And so this week, Dear Readers, I would like to take this opportunity to ask (and answer) the following question:

Psychic? Medium? It’s all the same. Or is it?

Perhaps the best place to begin is to make sure we’re clear on what a psychic is. A psychic is someone who can tune into the energy of people, places or things and acquire information from that energy that couldn’t otherwise be known. All of us have this ability to a greater or lesser extent. It sometimes goes by a more mundane moniker – intuition. But the psychic’s sensitivity is heightened and more developed such that he or she can process and interpret the information being received. The key, however, is that the psychic connects with the person or object being read.

A medium, like a psychic, is sensitive to energy and possesses a heightened sense of awareness. Mediums always possess psychic abilities. But unlike the psychic, the medium forms links with people other than the person he or she is reading for – namely, those who have passed on or crossed over to the other side. Or in the vernacular – the medium talks to dead people.

If you want to know that granny is safe and happy up there, you visit a medium. But if you want to know what’s going to happen in your love life or whether you should take that promotion, a psychic is what you need. Think of it this way – mediums deal with messages and psychics make predictions.

So the next time you hear of someone connecting spirit communication with psychics, you’ll know that they are really referring to the role of a medium. And with a smile you can point out to them that all mediums are psychic but not all psychics are mediums.
