Happy New Year!

As I write this, 2006 is drawing to a close. The after-Christmas sales are in full swing. Year-end reviews, in one form or another, are once again being touted by every newspaper and magazine. Many of us are trying to squeeze into clothing that we swear fit only days ago. And soon we’ll be singing (or at least humming) to the chorus of Auld Lang Syne and popping corks.

Nearly everyone we pass – be it friend or stranger – involves the wish of a Happy New Year. A switch is flipped in our heads and we just come out it with it – without thinking. And so, it got me thinking. Like it or not, a New Year is nearly upon us. But will it really be all that new?

2007 – New or just more of the same?

Will 2007 be a New Year? Or will it just be the familiar, old shoe that 2006 has become? I once observed someone giving a job interview. The interviewer said that he saw from the CV that the candidate had ten years of experience. But what he needed to assess was whether they really only had one year – just repeated nine more times – or ten full and progressive years.

I wonder how many of us begin 2007 having graduated from 2006. If we are only older and not any the wiser, then we have missed out on the opportunity to learn what 2006 has been trying to teach us in the past twelve months. Unfortunately, in such instances 2007 will only be 2006 dressed in new clothes.

Now is the time when I naturally do lots of Year Ahead Readings. It’s a comprehensive forecast of what’s to come in the next twelve months. So, you can get one at any time of year but many people like having them in January.

And as part of the reading I look back at the main themes of the previous year. All too often I can sense that the essence of what’s happening is what’s happened before. It’s like a long-playing scene out of Groundhog Day. For example, too frequently I can see that old demons were never really slain and will be rearing their ugly heads again.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. The future is what we make of it. We create our reality and the situations we find ourselves in are the situations we need to be in – like them or not. And we will remain there, repeating the same patterns, playing the same roles again and again until we learn – grow and change. Perhaps it’s another year – or perhaps it’s another lifetime if we continue to drift.
