Scientists prove what many of us already knew: The moon packs a powerful punch!
They say that a new moon on Monday is lucky. A ring around the moon is said to signal that rain is on the way. We should move into a new house during a new moon to ensure we’ll have more than we want. And we best beware of a full moon on Friday the 13th. The list of moon folklore that has built up over the centuries goes on and on.
But do you actually follow the progress of that sphere in the sky as it first disappears and then returns gradually to dominate the night? Did you know that as I write this the waxing moon is two days old?
What role does the moon play in your life?
More than you might think!
Here in Northern Spain, they take the moon very seriously. Try to plant your crops during anything other than a new moon and you can guarantee that those neighbours that you haven’t seen for months will appear out of nowhere to inform you – and stop you. Like I said, there’s no messing about when it comes to the moon round these parts.
As a child I used to think that the moon was made of cheese – yes, I admit it. Then I went through my phase to chatting to the man in the moon. But school taught me that all that was nonsense and that the only influence the moon has on our lives is measured in tides and light in the night sky. It didn’t quite wash though…
Today I read that at long last scientists have found a direct link between the moon and how we live. That’s right, scientists are now prepared to say that yes, the moon influences our behaviour.
New research and over 50 studies have revealed that the lunar cycle quantitatively impacts the human body in some pretty significant ways such as hormonal levels, asthma attacks, heart attacks, fertility, ovulation, menstruation, birth rate, urination and bladder function. Even that unexplained dicky tummy you might experience from time to time could be caused by the moon.
Researchers have also analysed years of data to conclude that rates of murder, assault and suicide can be mapped to the lunar phase. Some hospitals have even begun increasing staffing at full-moon times due to the increased demand for consultations and treatment.
Even our appetites appear to be linked to the moon. During a full moon a recent study documented that people eat more. Interestingly, and perhaps counter-intuitively, the consumption of alcohol actually decreases when the moon is at its fullest.
Why and how the moon affects us remain the unanswered $50,000 question. Theories range from the gravitational influence to electromagnetic radiation. No-one is sure. But what is now crystal clear is that it’s not just some rock in the sky.
Isn’t it great when modern science catches up with what so many of us already knew and took for granted!
If you don’t already, then perhaps it’s time you started taking the moon more seriously. The first step is to get yourself a lunar calendar – you might even have one already on your appointments diary or day planner.
Knowing the phase of the moon is the first step, but you’ll eventually want to find out more. There are eight phases of the moon as it waxes from new to full and then wanes back again. For example, starting new projects are best done during a new moon. Reference works are out there just waiting to explain the full and complete nuances for you. It can be fun as well as unfathomably empowering.
While the moon clearly influences our lives, we shouldn’t use it as an excuse. If your life isn’t going to plan or there’s an area that doesn’t send you over the moon, then there’s probably another influence involved that needs to be taken into account. That’s just how I help clients every day with my readings. Perhaps one could help you.
