Are psychics gifted at what they do? Or are they skilled at it?
This past week I received some very complimentary feedback from a recent reading. In it, my client explained some of the references that I received but which didn’t make sense to me. It’s natural that I wouldn’t understand them. My job during the reading was to tune in, perceive, relate and advise – the four corners of what a psychic should do.
During my readings, as you may know, I prefer to tell you what I’m sensing without validation. And so, it’s always nice to hear people’s stories afterwards so that I can connect the dots. But in this particular email, my client called me gifted.
To be sure, it’s very complimentary and a description that I am not a stranger to. Yet it always causes me to pause. You might say that I’m never sure how to react to being called a gifted psychic. It all boils down to this simple question:
Is being a psychic a gift or a skill?
I suppose it’s a bit of both. But if I were forced to choose I’d have to say it’s more of the latter than the former. That’s right, I think it’s more accurate and appropriate to be called a skilled psychic than a gifted one.
When I hear that someone is gifted in something I associate it with someone who has a natural ability or talent. It’s not something that they’ve had to work at. It just came to them. In this sense, it’s as much to be gifted with blue eyes and blond hair – if you find those characteristics appealing and desirable. You didn’t do anything to obtain them. They just came with the package that is you.
Now I will have to concede that to a certain extent being psychic is a gift. But I believe it’s a gift that we all share. Yes, that’s right. I believe that each and every one of us is psychic. If it feels like I’ve left something out, let me go back and add three little words to clarify my last statement. Here they are – to a degree.
Just as some people are born with an ear for music and some for playing sports, I believe that others of us are born with perhaps a keener sense of the unseen. But that’s it. That’s as far as I go with the notion that being psychic is a gift. In other words, someone might have a great voice but unless they do anything with it, they simply remain someone with a great voice.
To a psychic – and what I mean now is someone who can do it as a profession – they need to work at it. They need to study. They need to be tested and pushed. And they need to do it – a lot. Just like with everything else, practice does make perfect.
Someone who has an innate ability might get flashes, visions or even premonitions that are relevant and maybe even come true, but that doesn’t mean they are ready to hang out their shingle and start reading for others.
Being a professional psychic involves being able to read for clients one after another – when you want to and when you don’t – for those whom you want to read for and for those whom you’d rather not touch with a barge pole. And in all instances, you need to embody all that makes a professional – honour, dignity, integrity, compassion and commitment.
Remember, it’s not just what the psychic perceives that counts. How it’s conveyed and communicated to the client is perhaps even more important than being accurate. I can’t count how many people have come to me having had a reading with another s0-called professional psychic who predicted that they were going to die or experience some other catastrophic calamity.
When I hear of such instances, my heart first goes out to the client. Then I say a prayer for the psychic at issue. I pray that some day they will appreciate all the anxiety and pain that they have caused with their carelessness.
Let me say it again - reading for someone is a skill. We have to learn to connect. But more importantly we have to master what we see, what we feel and what we perceive. More often than not, the language that is spoken to a psychic is symbolic and not literal. So the death the amateur psychic thinks she sees might in fact simply be a symbol for change and rebirth.
Whenever a psychic starts giving you very literal and hard facts during a reading, warning bells should sound. Accept such information given if you will, but be suspicious because it’s probably a symbol that needs to be interpreted by a professional.
I am a seasoned and experienced professional psychic. Yes, I was born with an innate ability to see the unseen. But I have worked at it diligently and have been honing my skill for nearly 30 years. If you want to see what a reading with a skilled (and gifted) professional is like, then perhaps I am the psychic for you. You can read about my background by clicking here.
