A friend of mine forwarded to me a recent newspaper article on a famous psychic who’s now doing the cruise circuit. In case this phenomenon has missed you, psychics are now guest-starring on various cruise ships. The headlining psychic gives readings, lectures and is available at various times during the journey to mix and mingle with the passengers.

I have to say that I’ve never been on one of these cruises. If you have, then please write to me and tell about your experiences. But I also have to say that after reading about this cruise, anyone thinking about one should make sure they know what they are getting into with the onboard psychic.

What I know about this particular psychic is that she shoots from the hip, telling it how it is. I’ve always admired those who are direct speakers. Beating around the bush and padding what one has to say has never appealed to me. It strikes me as a waste of time. And as someone who’s always suffered from a short attention span, I’ve tried to simply get on with it.

But as I read the recount of this particular cruise with this particular psychic I now appreciate that there is a difference between being straightforward and forthright and what I can describe as nothing other than sheer callousness.

Passengers asked in a very public setting questions that were deeply personal and some apparently struggled even to get their words out. One man sought advice on how to get closer to his daughter. He was told to forget about her. A woman wanted to know what happened to her dog. He’s dead was the curt reply.

Not only did some of the answers this psychic give prove to be anything but completely wrong, but the style in which they were relayed caused distress and pain to those seeking comfort and closure.

More often than not, psychic readings come close to crossing the line into counselling sessions. The client has a problem that they cannot solve and they turn to the psychic as an advisor to give them insights, answers and guidance on how to go forward. And yet, not all psychics are professional counsellors or therapists. Indeed, many, if not most, have never had any professional training in either field.

When I hear about psychics giving answers such as the ones on the cruise that I read about, my estimation of the psychic involved goes down the drain. I don’t care about how many police cases they’ve solved or how many years they’ve been reading. I know all I need to know – and that is that they don’t know the number one rule to being a professional psychic:

The psychic must always be aware of the power and impact that their words could have on the client.

I strive to be accurate. But importantly, I do my utmost to deliver my impressions with compassion.

It’s true that sometimes I have to convey what the client doesn’t want to hear. But with all readings, my goal is to explain the options available to the client based on what I have perceived. At the end of the day, it’s the client’s life, not mine, and it’s up to them to decide how they live it. I respect my clients too much to ever tell them what to do.
