The psychic's prejudices and the reading!

Here's our topic — let's discuss in Psychic Chat!

Every day I receive emails from readers asking me questions about being psychic and seeking answers such as the place of spirituality in today’s society. It might take me a little while to respond due to my readings schedule and coaching commitments, but please know that I am grateful for and appreciative of your letters. I also wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone about my Psychic Chat forums.

Psychic Chat is an area I have created for you, dear readers, to contact me and each other. There’s space for you to comment on and discuss my Weekly Insights articles. There’s also an area for you to send me general questions on any matter psychic or spiritual. I will do my best to answer but what I’m really hoping is that Psychic Chat will become a community where all of us can share our psychic ideas and experiences.

Recently a Psychic Chat member asked me a brilliant question. In fact, it was so thought-provoking that I felt that I needed to share it and bring it to everyone’s attention by answering it in my Weekly Insights column.

Here’s the question as posted in Psychic Chat:

When you do a reading for someone, how much do your own prejudices, feelings and life experiences impact/affect the reading?

Do you find yourself saying something that you wouldn't feel was the correct thing to do, but your guide is saying that it is right for the person? If this is the case, do you then have mixed feelings about saying it? Do you find yourself wanting to qualify it in some way?

Also do you find yourself wanting/needing to use a phrase that for you either has no meaning or maybe embarrassing to say but which will mean something very specific to your client?

There is so much to this question. So much in fact, that I have decided to approach it point by point, section by section. And over the next weeks, I am going to take each part in turn and reply to it here in Weekly Insights. So, let’s get started with the first instalment…

My first response to this question is to that the psychic shouldn’t allow their own biases, prejudices and assumptions to affect the reading. Of course, that is easier said than done. Psychics are, after all, only human.

The challenge of the psychic, when asked for advice, is not to say what they personally would do in the situation or even what they think the client should do. No, their job is to connect to the client’s energy and to relate their perceptions and impressions regarding the client’s question.

The first step that the psychic must do is learn to step back and detach from their own personal everyday worries. We, like everyone else, have responsibilities and stresses. For instance, on my farm here in Spain there is what seems like a never-ending list of jobs and chores to be done.

If it’s not the sheep, it’s the chickens. If it’s not the vegetable patch, it’s the orchard. If it’s not maintenance work, it’s the restoration of my farmhouse, which after 400 years is in dire need of major TLC. And then there’s my day job – my readings, healings and coaching sessions.

But when I sit down to read for a client, I cannot allow myself to think about any of those other things. I have to call my energy back from those distractions. I put my other hat on – my psychic and intuitive hat – and I see myself as clocking on.

If a psychic cannot step back, then they aren’t reading the client’s energy. In that instance, they are reading their own energy. You might say that their impressions are obscured and all that they are really doing is projecting their energy onto the client. What results isn’t a psychic reading. While it might be rather cathartic for the psychic, it won’t be very helpful for the client who has paid good money for a reading.

Whenever I am advising someone who is taking their own initial steps as a psychic, the first thing we work on is learning to still the mind through meditation. This is an absolutely critical skill for the budding psychic to master. This centres them and enables them to go to a place of detachment, objectivity and neutrality.

From this place, a psychic can request to receive information without their own emotional response, expectations or fears. This is, like so many things in life, easier said than done. But with practice it can be achieved.

There’s also an element of professionalism that’s involved. If the psychic is charging for their readings, then they are providing a service. That service, as far as I’m concerned, carries a responsibility that is several fold . There’s an ethical duty on the psychic’s part not only to keep the information gleaned during the reading confidential but for the psychic to conduct the reading at the best of their ability.

The latter is where I believe there’s an implied requirement for the psychic to ensure that their own emotions, expectations, fears, assumptions, biases and prejudices do not taint or contaminate the reading.

When you are a professional psychic, you get all kinds of people asking you for readings. Some of these people are the most lovely kind of people who have ever walked the earth. And others can be from the other extreme – being mean-spirited, vengeful and cruel – and in some cases even criminal.

Before going full-time with my psychic and intuitive abilities, I was a criminal defence lawyer. The people I defended were sometimes innocent and had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Other times they had done things that ranged from the simply naughty to the practically unspeakable. But even if one could conclude that they were bad people, that didn’t mean that they weren’t entitled to a lawyer.

When called up, I defended these people to best of my abilities. It wasn’t a question of whether I liked them, approved of them, condoned their activities or even could forgive them. I was hired as a professional to do a job. And I did that job.

It’s much the same now that I am a full-time psychic and intuitive. I strive at all times to ensure that I remain objective and detached so that I am able to offer my clients what I perceive psychically and intuitively from a place of impartiality, neutrality and honesty.

Now having said all that, there is one instance when I do allow my feelings and experiences to come through during a reading. But you’ll have to wait until next week when I continue with my answer.

With my readings I aim not just to be accurate but to guide my clients so that they are in a stronger position of knowledge and power after the reading than they were before it. If you’ve never had such a reading, then you owe it to yourself to book a reading with me. Check out my range of psychic services here. A reading with me could bring the answers, advice and insight that have been eluding you for far too long.

And finally, over at IntuitiveBridges, I look at some recent medical research that concludes that skin cancer is more likely to occur on the left-hand side of the body than the right. Doctors are baffled as to why. But I offer my own insights as a medical intuitive. Read my article in full here!

As always, feel free to email me with any comments, suggestions or feedback on PsychicBridges.

Thanks again for all your support and until next week,

Kindest regards,
