It’s hard not to be affected by the news these days. No matter the source to which you turn, you are met with dire economic forecasts and what it’s all going to mean to you. It’s not pretty. In fact, it’s enough to send even the cheeriest of us into the dumps. So what can you do?

As you’ll know from my writings here and on my other site IntuitiveBridges, I’m all for personal empowerment, pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and getting on with what you WANT to do. Find your light and follow it is something that I try to live by. And this week I came across another person who does the same – Helene Hadsell.

Her name may not be familiar to you. But what this sprightly octogenarian has done in her lifetime is nothing short of amazing. When Helene wants something, she not only gets it – she sits back and lets it come to her. Sounds pretty remarkable if not downright unbelievable. And what’s more, she’s been doing it for years.

To many Helene is known as the “Contest Lady”. Whatever contest or competition Helene enters, she wins. She’s won more trips than she can remember. She’s won cars. She’s won beauty contests. She’s won furnishings for her home. But more than that, she actually won her home – a contest which more than two million other people had entered.

Some of us, if not most, would keep such a proven winning formula TOP SECRET. But not Helene. She’s not that kind of person. Indeed she wrote a book revealing how she does it and sold over three million copies. Recently she’s been doing the talk circuit sharing her inspirational story and spreading the word that if you want something then make it happen.

Helene’s method is called SPEC:

• Select it
• Project it
• Expect it
• Collect it

That’s a nice way of packaging her technique. It’s easy to remember and she and others can attest to the fact that it works. To many of us, however, it will sound very familiar. In essence, it’s what Claude Bristol wrote about years ago in his classic The Magic of Believing and has been updated and brought to the masses as The Secret.

Lately The Secret has taken something of beating in the press. Many say that it doesn’t work. I have to take issue as I can cite numerous examples in my own life where the unbelievable has come to pass just as I had wished for – or put differently ordered.

For me, there is a secret to The Secret. It’s all in the emotions – or as Helene would say it’s in your ability to expect it. If you cannot believe that it will happen, it won’t. It will remain outside your frame of reference. And unless you can get excited about it, the time that it will take to come to pass will likely test your faith, leading you to give up in despair in most cases.

In these times of debt and repossessions and foreclosures, I cannot think of a better message that is more than one of hope; it’s one of POWER. Whether it’s The Secret or Helene’s SPEC, I encourage you to take charge of your life and reclaim it. Go out there and get what you want. With the power of belief behind you, there truly is nothing that is beyond your reach.

Sometimes, however, we can find ourselves worrying about what would happen if our wish came true, and in so doing undermine ourselves. Others of us may find it daunting to begin to work with such an awesome power – that of belief, expectation and faith.

To the first group, I might suggest a reading to help frame your dream. And to the latter, one of my coaching sessions might be just what you need to free yourself from your limiting thoughts.
